Description
The House Finch is now a common songbird at almost any feeder in the United States. First brought to this country illegally as caged songbirds, they were released in the 1940's in New York City by vendors and owners, rather than face prosecution under the Migratory Bird Act of 1918. Originally found only in Mexico and the southwestern US, they now are in every state and parts of Canada and have displaced several other species. Even so, they make a cheerful songbird, and sound especially endearing when together in a large flock and chattering among themselves.
