Description
A female American goldfinch (Spinus tristis) perched in a wild rose shrub. American Goldfinches breed later than most North American birds. Females are a somewhat more muted yellow than the males. They are generally found across most of North America, non-breeding in some areas, breeding in others, and living year round in a great swath of the United States. American goldfinches wait to nest until June or July when milkweed, thistle, and other plants have produced their fibrous seeds, which goldfinches incorporate into their nests and also feed their young. Taken in spring in South Carolina.
