Description
A Sumac tree or shrub usually grow wild worldwide and can be anyone of 35 species in the family Anacardiaceae. The berries are harvested by many as a spice for cooking, a flavoring for a refreshing drink similar to lemonade or used for medicinal purposes. The leaves have been used for dying and tanning as well. The Sumac is generally one of the first trees in autumn to change color, with glowing red leaves. If you plan on trying some as a cooking ingredient, don't harvest them along a roadside where they may have been sprayed with chemicals, but look in lightly wooded areas or near open meadows.
