Description
The iconic Hagia Sophia, in Istanbul Turkey. Hagia Sophia was originally an Orthodox basilica, later a mosque, and is now a museum in Istanbul, Turkey. From the date of its dedication in 360 until 1453, it served as the Greek Patriarchal cathedral of Constantinople, except for a short period when was a Roman Catholic cathedral (1204-1261). Hagia Sophia was a mosque from 1453 until 1931, when it was secularized and opened as a museum two years later. The present building was constructed between 532 and 537. When Constantinople was conquered by the Ottoman Turks in 1453, Sultan Mehmed II ordered that the building be converted to a mosque. Islamic features were added and Christian features removed or plastered over. When Turkey became a republic, it was converted to a museum.
The Hagia Sophia is famous for its massive dome, and was the largest cathedral in the world for one thousand years. It was and advanced structure for its time, and is one of the greatest surviving examples of Byzantine architecture. The Hagia Sophia served as a model for many other Ottoman mosques, such as the Blue Mosque and the Mosque of Suleyman the Magnificent, both also in Istanbul.
