Description
House finches (Haemorhous mexicanus) originally were only found in Mexico and the western half of the US, but in the early 1900s many were captured and being sold as caged birds, called "Hollywood Finches", in New York City. By 1940, the remaining birds were turned loose, and they quickly started breeding and spread across almost all the eastern United States and southern Canada within the next 50 years. Now they are a common sight around most bird feeders except for a vertical area down the middle of the US. This male perched on the small dripping fountain of the bird bath during the late part of the day, usually referred to as the golden hour. House finches usually nest in proximity to humans, hence their name.
