Description
Northern pine siskins (Spinus pinus) are a tiny bird in the finch family, and have disruptive and erratic winter behavior. One year a flock might devour everything your feeders have to offer and the next year they will not even put in an appearance. I heard their constant twitter and going to the window, I watched them flit back and forth between the forsythia shrubs and the hanging feeders. I don't know how long they will hang around, but in the meantime, the feeders are needing refilling at a faster rate then normal! Sometimes they are confused with winter goldfinches because of the yellow wing bars, but to positively identify them, look for the bold streaking on the chest.
