Description
Red bellied woodpeckers (melanerpes carolinus) are spread out over the eastern half of the US and are familiar figures at a bird feeder. Though they have a red streak down their head, they are known for their red bellies, as you can see here. This is a female red bellied woodpecker, the male would have the red streak coming all the way down to his bill. They are year round residents.
