Description
At a nature preserve in South Carolina, this red-headed woodpecker (Melanerpes erythrocephalus) was busy collecting food for winter. He would pick up an acorn, fly to this tree, look around to make sure he was not being watched, carefully put the acorn in the crevice at his feet and stare at it for a second or two. He would take it back out and redeposit it until he was sure it was safe, then fly off to get another one. In later weeks he will fly back to his stockpile and have food to eat. This bird behavior is termed "caching" and certain bird species practice this yearly.
