A black and white cow has her head down in the grass, getting her fill. Around her head are three cowbirds looking as if they are having an important conversation with her. You often see cowbirds around cows, and wild animals such as buffalo. They eat the insects that are stirred up by the host animal as they eat. Cowbirds are disliked by bird fanciers because they do not build a nest for laying their eggs, instead they parasitize the nests of other birds. Often the baby cowbird is much bigger than the other nestlings and so the cowbird gets first dibs on the food that is brought in. Shot taken in upstate South Carolina.
