Description
Paris Mountain State Park lies 5 miles north of Greenville SC. Dating back to the Great Depression, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) built the structures, including the Camp Buckhorn lodge, which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. One of the earliest uses of the mountain area by the city of Greenville was as a source of water between 1890 and 1916. Numerous lakes and dams in the park were built in 1890 by the Greenville City Water System as part of the reservoir. Now these areas are a reminder of its past history. The earliest settlers of the land around Paris Mountain were the Cherokee Indians. The state park offers camping, swimming, and picnic areas plus Buckhorn Lodge and beautiful paths up and down the mountain and around Lake Placid. The photograph has had painterly touches added.
