Description
The American Goldfinch is the state bird of New Jersey, Iowa, and Washington; where I live in the mountains of South Carolina they are year round residents. During the winter their coats become more drab, but this really lets the exquisite pattern formed by the black and white feathers stand out. This one is perching in a dogwood tree after a snowfall, ready to head to the bird feeder. In winter, they are especially numerous at the feeders.
