Description
A male downy woodpecker (Dryobates pubescens) perches on a forsythia cane in winter in South Carolina, eyeing his food choices. Living solely in North America, it will forage for insects on small tree branches and weeds, and also comes to suet feeders. The smallest of woodpeckers in its area, the downy is only about 5" in length. The male has the red patch on its head while the female does not. It is very similar to the larger hairy woodpecker.
