Description
This male summer tanager (piranga rubra) is finishing a refreshing dip in the bird bath after traveling to the United States from Central or South America. Usually perched high in the canopies of trees, they catch bees and wasps and after eating the adults, will then consume all of the grubs and larvae. Summer tanagers arrive in the US in April and leave in October for their wintering grounds. The only completely red bird in the US, they breed in the southern half of the country.
